The Big Question: What Do Moms Really Need?

Written by: Michelle Friedman, LCSW, PMH-C

What do I need right now? This is a question that the clinicians at Grace Street Counseling often ask of ourselves and the women that we work with. Do you know what you need? Have you taken the time to truly check in with yourself lately?

Many times for moms the answer sounds something like, “I don't know what I really need?” Maybe sleep? A shower? A moment of silence to myself? If a new mom is answering that what she needs is to meet her basic needs, there is a bigger discussion to have.

Have you ever noticed how people focus so much on the items that a new mom will need? The latest toy, stroller, carrier, and countless other items become the focus. Yes, we do need some things around to help care for our new baby but what about our actual needs?

So many moms feel alone in the weeks and months after having a baby. They have all the material items they need but they don't have enough support and knowledge about what will truly be helpful during the Fourth Trimester, or the 12 weeks following birth. Everything has changed and sometimes it's hard to recognize your own life, even your own self. Family, friends and even doctors will say what you are going through is normal but it feels so far from the truth. Some even wonder when their lives will feel familiar again?

We understand that every mom’s needs are individual and shouldn't be placed into a one size fits all category. So what do Moms really need? Moms need support, community, connection, laughter and most of all to feel heard and cared for. Even if you are feeling a little lost and in unfamiliar territory right now, just remember that one small step such as joining a fitness group, calling a maternal mental health specialist or joining a support group can lead to big changes for you and your family.

The season of the fourth trimester is one that is filled with so many ups and downs. It is not meant to be done alone. Support for all of your real needs is out there, and you can find your way to true joy and connection with the new version of you!
